This video discusses concepts that will be discussed next day in class. You assignment is to watch the video and leave a comment sharing with the class your reaction. Please note that this is more of the psychological perspective as against the communication skills perspective. But in this case we look at this clip through the lens of both perspectives.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteIn my analysis of this video and looking at the entire communication process, there are some similarities. For example, our self concept, who we are and how we communicate or function is clearly affected by external factors such as friends, family etc. which influences how we define ourselves. It's almost as though our self concept is learned. However, we do have free will, which gives us the ability to accept or disregard external stimuli. As a result, we need to find a balance between the conscious and sub-conscious mind when it comes to reasoning and acceptance of beliefs, values and norms as it affects/molds who we are as a self.
Ismail.
In my perspective this video looked at the people that influences our self concept. We have the final decision in order to see ourselves worthwhile. Our friends and family only see the person outside but what they can't see is who you are inside. No one has the authority to tell me I can't. Just as communication, self concept is learnt and it reminds us that we have the right to think positive about ourselves. The more we see good in us the more we achieve greater things.
ReplyDeleteWell spoken.
DeleteAs social beings we often grapple with the din of our ideological surroundings and the meanings they would have us make of ourselves.
The world is a hall of mirrors that would contort and alienate our self-images in a thousand different ways if we let it. I second your point that we as individuals have the last word in all this.
The ideal social actor is self-secure enough to not "get chain up" by the quicksand of conflicting social norms while avoiding self-absorbed, solipsistic arrogance.
Finally, taking simplistic values with materialistic overtones like success/failure with grains of salt gives our self-concepts far more breathing room. Accomplishment and fulfillment take many forms.
We would do well to find one that sits well with our souls.
Good Evening
ReplyDeleteIn reaction to the video, I have to agree that the way we communicate is affected by our family, schooling, religion, friends ect. But, what struck home to me was our responsibility to our self as communicators to be self motivated. Though this is a psychological concept , I am understanding that a person who is self motivated or does not allow negativity to consume them will enjoy communicating in any forum.
Good evening
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the video is trying to explain to us why we communicate the way we do and what may have been the stimuli that influenced us in our moulding process in becoming who we are and how we see ourselves, "Self Concept." It can come from how we were socialized in our early years to our peers influence as teens or as adults. We have to make the ultimate decision to be who we want to be, what we stand for and what we want to represent in the final analysis. No one is going to define who I am, I am the maker of my destiny. We as communicators have to be clear and unwavering in our representation of one's self as not to be miss understood.
Hello everyone
ReplyDeletewell as for me i certainly can relate to this video and i think that it collates with my psychology class because one's self concept, even though it is the concept that you have of your self it is still affected and influenced by everything around you. To a great extent even though we might have our own positive assessment of our self we still rely on what other people think or say to us for conformation. Just my view no matter how motivated and positive we are about our self we will at some point in our life rely/depend on the concept that someone else has of us. It is a need that every human being has and that is the need to be appreciated and recognised.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting and important concept; often many persons don't understand it fully or are not fully able and willing to embrace it. I do believe that what and who we think we are is at the sole core discretion of our each individual selves. The importance we place on our beliefs, abilities, value, self worth and the role we play in the greater scheme of our lives need to be one decided and agreed upon by no one else other than ourselves.
Society, the environment, music, childhood, memories, stigma, religion, money ...the list can go on. Although all are influential, is it really who we are? Our conscious mind may say so. Our sub conscious mind may disagree. I encourage all to get into utter stillness and reach into your universal mind. Not only are we a product of everything around us, but I believe that we have not yet tapped into the vastness of what we are. Take the journey to discover the real us.
Hi.Good night. My comprehension as to the video has to do with our psychology, our minds, feelings, emotions about what people think about us but most importantly our reaction from statements and influence,as a result of both physical and historical episodes being applied to our self concept and our acceptance or refusal of such ideas. Self concept have to do with who we are and how we communicate. Our self concept as understood is influenced by a number of factors like friends, family, school, environment amongst others. Self concept is learned. Most times, this influences, molded by others, eat so deep into our beliefs even though it is not our natural personality,we just accept it. The question is "HOW DO I DEFINE ME"? Good, bad, loser or failure? Because people are not responsible for my self concept, i do not need confirmation from anyone that am going to change. I need to think positive. If i need a transformation, to change my self concept from bad to good or good to better,i need a positive affirmation from me. It is not enough to say it but to mean it and act towards achieving it.the decision to change is taken in an instance but the journey takes a lot of steps. Am not quoting verbatim but a Chinese philosopher, Lao-Tzu stated that,"A journey of a thousand miles start with a step". Thank you.
ReplyDeleteDefinition of ourselves and who we are as adults, can mostly be influenced by many previous, ongoing and continuing factors which may or may not have an effect on us due to both our conscious and unconscious thoughts or feelings. Everyday we continue to define ourselves in a good or bad way and sometimes in-between and this is done mostly to, for or at the expense of other people and how they value us. It is rarely done at our expense. The video is good because it provides information on how important it is to keep a positive view of ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely gave me a different outlook in life! Instead of blaming others, overthinking certain tasks and thinking negatively about situations, this video helped me to think more positively and to be responsible with my self concept by firmly speaking to myself that i can indeed succeed and overcome certain firms!
ReplyDeletefears* typo!!
Deletethis video simply states how you define self concept I believe that we take on what people says about us and afterwards we blame others for it he said people mould our self concepts but we have the responsibility if we take that on or not and we can't blame others for what they say.I am responsible for my self concepts and I can change it even though we failed in the past we can still move on
ReplyDeleteAfter viewing this video I have come to appreciate the concept of self or self concept as it is referred to.
ReplyDeleteThis video have reinforced my belief that I am responsible for my self and who and what I become in this life will ultimately depend on me and me alone, no-one should be or can be held accountable for my decisions.
Not even the people in my life that may tried to mold for in the end I have to make the best decisions for my life for it is I who will have to live it.
The lecturer speaks of the conscious and sub conscious and his explanations have help me to understand how and alraedy used t6ool actually works..it was agood and very user friendly video that anyone should be able to relate too.
Goodnight to everyone! It is really important to know the meaning of self-concept. It shapes part of the an individual belief, values and confidence. Sometimes we tend to dwell on negatives and positive that other speak to us and bring it into reality. However we must learn to ignore the negative that can harm us and for the positive build on it. This video reminds me that what we think sub consciously of ourselves determines who we are and what we can become. Its important to each individual to always remember that God took time to create us for a purpose. Never doubt your abilities and talents and always believe in yourself.
ReplyDeleteSelf-Concept is a never ending process. As situations/issues arise in life we can focus on the positive or negative. This has alot to deal with "brought up see". It is a conscientious decision to think positive at all times which is ideal. We do not live in an ideal world so it becomes work in progress.

ReplyDeleteWe need to look at our self and see who we are and what we want for ourselves. This helps determines our self concept. All of us have the ability to change, we do not need the permision others to do so.The process of change can lead to many conflicts from within, like the positives and the negatives.A positive persuit will lead to success. When the negatives come, we need to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteGood day miss, by looking at the video it helped me to better understand the through meaning of self concept, personally i do not believe that our self concept is defined by our own understanding of self but our self concept is defined by God himself. we my think of our self in one way but may not understand fully who we really are, our true identity lies in Christ and when we come into an understanding of who He is, we can now understand the purpose and through meaning of our self.
ReplyDeleteGood Evening Mrs and bloggers,
ReplyDeleteThe presentation on Self Concept by Steve Thomas had some very interesting points with regards to how the self concept is formed and its permanency in our lives. While we were taught to accept what is handing down to us, he reiterated that the choice is the individual's own to accept such as part of their self concept. I think, as children we were cultured to believe all that our parents or guardians taught us as the gospel truth and like obedient children we adhere to such. Only in that stage of self realization that we decide on what we may want to become and therein come to play, the concept of self affirmation, where we can speak to ourselves in changing our self concept of the things that we dont like about ourselves
A pleasant day to everyone. This video answered some questions that I never really ask myself, but it was quite informative. It allowed me the understanding that everyone has a self-concept, beit negative or positive and this self-concept is defined by peoples influence on our lives and our unknowing ability at times to listen believe and apply these influences to our being.
ReplyDeleteWhat is interesting to note though, is the fact that from the age of reason we have a choice and a responsibility to accept or reject who or what influences our lives and even though we may tend to accept negativity, there is hope in knowing that a negative self-concept with time could be reversed by continuous positive affirmations in our life. 'Interesting isn't it?
Good day...
ReplyDeleteThe most important message that I got from veiwing this video is that we all have self concepts.Self concept is who we understand ourselves to be as we are told by people who have influences on our life, our self concept depends on our reations to what we are told. We have the power to choose whether or not we let what we are told afect us. We can chose to accept what they say or we can choose to ignore them. We have the power to change our self concepts by using self motivation and positive thoughts.
HAVE A GOOD DAY!

ReplyDeleteGood evening ….
ReplyDeleteThis video has opened up my eyes to what self concept is all about.
At the beginning of this video I was clueless as to how someone could define a self concept, but now I understand. How one views or sees themselves is considered a self concept. Many times we give others the power to influence our self concept, due to various insecurities, but we should not give others the power to determine how we see or think of ourselves.
I learned that our conscious and subconscious can play an important part in determining and changing our self concept. We must first be honest and willing to change our self concept. Yes, like everything in this world it will take time but I think it is worth the wait.
Hi, a pleasant night to all bloggers,
ReplyDeleteThis video has really opened my mind to what self concept really is. It showed me that self concept is basically how you view yourself but it's dependent on people that influence you, especially when in the early stages of your life. However, there's hope if you should view yourself negatively because of others. Your conscious mind might be negative, thinking what others said was true but you can give yourself a glimmer of hope by positive attitudes and inspirations in your subconscious mind.
That's the good thing about self concept you don't have to believe what others tell you, you are mainly responsible for your perception of yourself. So think positively and live responsibly. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteGood morning:
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Mr. Thomas' video on Self-concept and found it to be quite powerful, inspiring, yet practical. It showcased the impact of self-perception, self fulfilling prophecies and the extent to which these determine one's success or failure in life.
In the video, I saw the importance of not just self-talk but positive self-talk through affirmations, targeted at the subconscious mind, which in turn makes the conscious mind a believer.
It motivated me to reassess my level of success, to redefine what I really would like to accomplish and how pertinent a positive self-concept is to its fulfillment.
Thank you for sharing this video.
Good evening,
ReplyDeleteI trust that things are well with all.
With regard to the Self Concept video, I agree with the general consensus of the other respondents; i.e. Our self concept can be influenced ("moulded") by others but it is truly defined by ourselves.
Too often our image of ourselves is unrealistically influenced by outside factors.
From a logical perspective; if we wanted to get from San Fernando to Port of Spain, we would not take directions from someone who has only ever been to Gasparillo. They have no concept of the entire journey, they can assist on part of the trip but the majority of it is still up to us.
Likewise, our Self Concept should be influenced by others but not DICTATED by them. If Self Concept was supposed to be defined by others I strongly believe it would no longer be called SELF concept.
Thank you for your time and goodnight.
Bless and bless
Greetings to all,
ReplyDeleteIn response to the video, I have been brought to understand that I have the responsibility of molding my self concept and also the ability to positively or negatively contribute to the self concept of others.
I have never considered the measure by which others may have molded my self concept, and now that I am aware of the influence a stranger can have my self concept I will be more selective in what I choose to believe. The video has also shown me my need of having more positive self talks.
Thank you for the enlightenment.
HI EVERYONE
ReplyDeleteI UNDERSTAND THAT THE PEOPLE WE INTERACT WITH HELP TO MOLD OUR SELF CONCEPT, BUT ATE THE SAME TIME WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL WE BECOME. IT IS UP TO US TO FILTER THE RIGHT MESSAGE IN ORDER FOR US TO HAVE A HEALTHY SELF CONCEPT. I HAVE COME TO REALIZE THAT 'SELF CONCEPT' IS AN ONGOING PROCESS BECAUSE WE ARE SOCIAL BEINGS AND INTERACTION WITH OTHERS CREATE DIFFERENT SITUATIONS WITH DIFFERENT OUTCOME THEREFORE WE NEED TO 'GUARD' OUR SELF CONCEPT AND ALSO BE MINDFUL OF WHAT WE SPEAK INTO OTHERS LIFE. I COULD NOT HELP BUT WONDER HOW EFFECTIVE WOULD THIS VIDEO BE FOR SOMEONE WHO SUFFERS FROM DEPRESSION.
Good day everyone,
ReplyDeleteFrom the video, I understand self-concept to be the perception we have of ourselves. How we see ourselves plays an important role in our lives. It determine how we deal with others perception of us, as we must admit that we are influenced by the people around us. We sometimes allow what they perceive about us to control us. However, we have the responsibility to choose how we want to live our lives. The truth be told, we are responsible for the decisions we make. We benefit or suffer the consequences from our choices. We need to utter thoughts of positive values about ourselves and even when we are communicating about ourselves to others. ‘Be yourself. Who else is better qualified?’ Frank J. Giblin II.
The video was primarily about how one's self concept is affected and determined. Many people, mostly parents, influence your self concept but it is ultimately your choice to either accept it or refuse it. Also, in the video it was explained how strong emotions affect your subconscious mind and then that in turn may influence your conscious mind.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Mrs. Mangah
ReplyDeleteOn watching the video which spoke about one's self concept and how they perceive them self was very interesting. For me personally it is just as the speaker said in terms of doing a quiz and getting a low grade I get upset, some people bring themselves down by feeling bad but others pull themselves up. The downside to this is that people have certain strengths and weaknesses so, therefore they react to certain situations in different ways. The other example he brought up with the mother telling the child to desists from climbing trees or any high place is agreeable because she does not want the child to injure him/herself. The child at that age will or will not listen and this will shape his/her self concept. That child when he or she gets older depending on his prior experience with climbing may or may not be afraid of heights. In synopsis our self concept can change depending on how we understand things from a certain point depending on our feelings, beliefs and attitudes.
Good day,
ReplyDeleteEven though it is 'self' concept, it is a combination of other sources that fuses together which molds us into becoming the person we are. However, we are not meant to be what others want of us, as the video rightfully said "we are winners", but only through our conscious/sub-conscious thoughts we become winners and in this case 'winners' is relative to what we want for ourselves. We must tap into that part of our minds that tells us to be a winners and as we develop and grow into that person we must revisit that place as often as possible to see how much we have grown.
This video simply states how the views, feelings, statements and opinions of others can very well mold us into the person that we are today. As a young being it would have a greater effect on us and we would faster adapt that same opinion, or view etc. However it is shown that it is our responsibilty to either incorporate what was taught to us or not, so with that it is now difficult to blame others for how we have turned out because we have the power to change our self concept. We are responsible for our own change, so we don't have to change if we don't want to or we can if we do. When we do want to change we have to have a positve affirmation in order for our minds to believe it. Our conscious is very hard to convince but our subconscious however is a little easier this is where a strong positive affirmation is necessary. The decision to change is very easy but the journey towards it is difficult. You deserve the best you and nothing less than that.

News Paper Article: Sunday 5th February, 2012 (page10)
After reading the headlines I thought that the people of Cedros we complaining about the crime situation, but after reading the article in it's entirety I found that they were talking about life on a whole just not one aspect. The fact that they lost their way of making a living when the coconut industry in their community fell apart, people stopped caring especially when it seemed like the government and no one cared, everyone just gave up and stopped taking pride in what was theirs. They let their animals go astray and over run the community therefore making it difficult on their neighbors as well. But with the intervention of the Ministry of Agriculture they feel like some one does care and is willing to go the extra mile to take back their community and rebuild it to what it was and even better. You see when people feel that you have a vested interest in them they give 110%

Journal Entry 3.
If I have to sum up how I perceive myself I would first have to state that I am convicted in my love and belief if my God, a no nonsense person when it comes to the sanctity of the marriage union, strong family values, I don't compromise my moral character, so you can say that I am a lot "old school". Apart from all this I am very loving, affable, love to laugh and have a good time cherish people. That's me in a nut shell straight and to the point.

An event that had an impact on my life was travelling abroad for the first time. I can say that it definitely did, I felt liberated and confident something that all those years ago I never thought I would because I was such a quiet child and kept to myself, never had too many friends, a loner of such, I guess I didn't trust people much. I thought that I was going to be scared, nervious and intimidated but for me it was like I exhailed. I can say that my view of life did change it opened my eyes to new adventures, broadened my horizions and made me open to new cultures as well as different people which made me look at people and accept them for who they are and not what I perceive them or think they should be.

Hi
My name is Karen Burgess and my major is Human Resource Management
As a communicator I would rate myself as a 9, because I think that I possess the skills that is needed to interpret information and relay messages effectively and I think that I am a good listener as well.
How can I improve as a communicator? Well I get nervous if I have to stand in front of a crowd to speak so that is one avenue that I need to toughen up on as well as my writing skills. Another area is that my emotions sometimes to show on my face and that sometimes needs to be controlled so as not to be perceived or interprited incorrectly.

Yes I use slang in my everyday conversations because of community language it is easier than speaking in standard English all the time and the fact that it is understood by your peers it makes communication easier.
I would like to think that I use it appropriately, because you think of the context that you are using it in and apply it.

I think that I am a good verbal communicator because I have always prided myself on improving the way I speak, learning the proper pronunciation and not being afraid to ask questions when I don't know or understand something.
In my job as a Customer Relations Officer you come into contact with different types of people of different walks of life and you have to be able to adapt, be sensitive to different scenarios and always be aware with whom you are speaking in order to be able to communicate efficiently and effectively. You have to know when to speak in layman terms for those who would not be able to understand the jargon you are using, you may need to break it down to terms they can understand. It is all about being alert, sensitive and a good listener as well as being able to empathize.

My impression of the article left me thinking that the teacher did not want to be forced out or to leave the school that she has managed because she believes that she is helping and making a difference there, but after reading the article in it's entirety makes me wonder if she is just being difficult and just using the incident to get her own way. It doesn't seem like it's about the kids anymore.

I can't say that I learned anything different on the culture that our group presented in class to be honest because it is a country that has such a similar culture to ours in music, sport, culture and religions. In researching this country it just reiterated and acknowledged and made me have more appreciation for the country and and it's people. As far as influencing the way that I communicate, it would make me be more aware and attentive when they are trying to communicate.

The in-class presentations impressed upon me that no matter where we live or what language we speak we have similar values and beliefs, for example we are family oriented people and we love our cultures and food. We are all passionate people in our own communities and are generally loving a people.

I think my culture has played a big role in the way I communicate because we as Trinidadians are such a flamboyant and expressive people that naturally it would be transferred to us being socialized in the essence of Calypso, Rapso, Pan and the Dialect that we speak. For me because of this my verbal and non verbal communications are heightened based on our community language the people we interact with will be able to understand my kinesics, gestures, eye contact, emblems and body postures as well as my para language, intonation, quality, volume, rate and pitch of my speech can be understood any where in Trinidad.

Title: My Young Ladies of Today
ReplyDeleteLong gone are the days when you would hear the term "young ladies should be seen and not heard", I miss those days, for todays ladies are loud, bold faced, obnoxious and even crass at times. You must have guessed it by now that it is a pet peeve of mine, call me old fashioned but there are just some teachings that should not be lost. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying that we should be push over’s, dumb and docile but there is a difference between being assertive and being disruptive, offensive and tasteless.
Why is it that you crave attention soooo.. much? Is it insecurity? Whatever it is figure it out and "CHOOSE" to be different "CHOOSE" to break the negative cycles in your life and create new positive ones, ones you would be proud of.
Please my young beautiful ladies take pride in yourself, want better for you and your future reputation, one that your family would admire.
Heading: With or Without Cell phones
ReplyDeleteWhat did we do before cell phones reached our shores because it seems like most Trinidadians cannot do without their phones. No longer are we comfortable without it attached to our hip, our ear or holding it like a comforter in our hands, so much so that we are totally unconscious to what is happening around us when we are either twittering, bbming, oh and even blogging.
I have seen some people crossing the street oblivious to what is going only because it is absolutely imperative that they take that call or send that message. I have seen people almost get knocked down because they stopped in the middle of the road to answer the phone, "why, because it is a matter of life and death" no because they are addicted to this piece of communication device that takes their money and may one day take their life.
So please people be aware of where you are and what you are doing that call is not worth your life.
Heading; Fees, Fees, Fees
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that every other country except Trinidad and Tobago are raising their fees. Departure tax, visa fees, where are the subsidies for us, we spend so much money to travel to other countries yet most of the countries we travel to don't even need visas to come to our island, I think that we are losing a lot of money this way and something needs to be done to rectify this. Some food fro taught....

Heading: Experience vs Qualifications
This is a battle that has been going on in the public sector for some time and there seems to be no end in sight for some time to come, experience vs qualifications. Yes I do believe that you should be qualified but there has to be something to be said for the experienced. The young people of today are qualified yes but ask them to do simple tasks and they can't perform and it is the experienced person who has to show them how.
Now these qualified people come into an institution in higher posts but the experienced people whom they are in charge of have to show them how to do the job. Is that fair? If I can do the job I deserve the position you can't just use me!!!

Heading: Don't Compare
It is something that has been on my mind for a long time, the fact that some parents find it necessary to compare their children to other kids who my be perceived to be doing well in school. I am here to express to parents that this only causes stress and discomfort to your child, the feeling that they are not good enough, what they do is not good enough and therefore causes self esteem problems for the child. Maybe you need to find out that child's strengths and weaknesses are and nurture the weakness so that it would become a strength.
Each child is a different and unique individual accept them for who they are.
Posted by MissKaay at 6:56 PM
Heading: Is it right for parents to decide their children's future?
I think that it is wrong for parents to impress upon their children what they would like for them to accomplish in life, it should be left up to the child to decide on what they feel passionate about and would like to pursue in life and the parents should just be there to guide, support and give advise, not to control and take over.
Where structure and planning is needed there should they be to nurture. So please parents you lived your life already let the kids do what they need to do to mature and learn life's lessons.

Heading: Sports
ReplyDeleteWhat is it about sports that men are soooo.... obsessed with? Now don't get me wrong I like sports but I tell you these days I feel like it's coming out of my pores with this husband of mine who looooo...ves sports not just one but all, the channel moves from one sport to the other, basketball, cricket, golf, tennis, you name it he watches it. Oh how could I forget his favorite pastime football, he eats and breathes this game. To be honest I am just fed up to the point that I could "SCREAM".

Heading: Work
Why does work have to feel like a chore, isn't it supposed to be something that you enjoy doing? When did it become a chore? I can't even remember the last time I enjoyed going to work. Why do bosses and supervisors find it necessary to make work your work life so miserable and uncomfortable yet still expect you to function at full capacity and pleasant. Don't they think that it would be better for everyone to treat people with respect and dignity and they would get the same in return. "You catch more bees with honey rather than vinegar".
Food for thought.

Heading : Positivity
I remember my mother saying to me when I was younger "if you have nothing good to say shut your mouth", and this has stayed with me as a lot of other thins that I was taught growing up and I find that it is one of the things that still holds true for today's world. When commenting about something or someone if you can't give a positive suggestion or critique with some positivity to back it up please do as my mom says and "Shut Yuh Mouth", because it does nothing but brings the person down and discourages them and depending on the individual he would retrieve into a shell and would not want to contribute again.
So please be so ever mindful of other people's feelings.
